Women can live without their handbags - this is a given. But who says they want to? Believe it or not, a handbag can be just as important - if not more important - than clothes. This is why shopping for handbags is as time-consuming an activity as shopping for clothes. The handbag may only be an accessory but get it in the wrong shape, size, and style or wear it wrong and it would surely ruin the look you are trying to pull. If you’re short and petite, never lose sight of proportions: small bags for small girls, chunky bags for taller lasses. Do not even think of splurging on a large designer handbag. If you’re large-hipped, use your bag to take eyes away from your hip area. A short-strapped designer handbag can easily do the trip. Pick out a hobo bag or a shoulder bag which ends well above your hip line. Or, you could pursue purses with a passion and tuck a relatively large one under your arm. Again, it’s all a matter of working proportions — that of the bag’s and yours.

If you’re plus-sized, go plus-sized as well. Forget cute and diminutive. You’re not this proportions-wise; why should your handbag be otherwise? A small tote, even if it’s the loveliest designer handbag to ever grace a catalogue, will only make you look like a truck. Work with your size and work with your bag by going for totes that are wider than the regular hobo bag. It’s also a good idea to get bags with short or medium-length straps.

If you have wonderful curves, let them do the talking. Your designer handbag can help you flaunt ‘em. If most of the tips above caution you to hide one flaw or the other, this tip does the exact opposite. I say, flaunt what you’ve got. Choose a designer handbag which ends above the waist. Stay away from the really small or enormous ones. They do nothing for your shoulders and nothing for your physical assets. Or, you could always go for the fabulous baguette and pick up a drool-worthy Fendi clutch.

Whether it’s a cheap tote you’re looking for or a designer handbag that would make every female within a two-mile radius oooh and aaah in envy, whether you want a purse that is made of nylon, straw, or canvas or a designer handbag made from microfiber, wool, or jacquard, remember to follow the rule of proportions. Handbags should not merely be functional or fashionable, they should also flatter. A good handbag does not only inspire envy, it makes the most out of what your momma gave you. Let it.
